 Halifax Armoury

The Halifax Armoury in central Halifax is a historic building that served as part of the city's defensive plan in the late 1890's. While the exterior of this very cool looking building is based on a medieval castle, it was actually one of the most advanced structures of its day.

The Halifax Armories, 1899

The building remains an active military structure. It has played an important part in many Canadian wars, being an important transit point for soldiers before departing by ship for the Boer War and both World Wars. After the Halifax Explosion the armoury provided shelter for many who had lost their homes.

The Halifax Armory is said to be haunted by a ghost that is dressed in the uniform of a First World War era Canadian Soldier.

Update October 2011 our thanks to one of our readers for providing the following: The main entrance is located at the Western side of the building on North Park St. with the rest of the structure bordered by Cunard St. on the North side, Maynard St. on the East, and Armoury Place on the South. Hope this is helpful to any out-of-towners looking for the place.
